This new legislation went into effect on January 1st, 2016. It allows certificated public school employees to take up to 12 weeks of paid leave for bonding/child-rearing purposes. An employee would be able to use their accumulated personal leave and then subsequently use differential sub-pay (your salary minus the cost of a substitute teacher). The leave must be used within one year of the birth/adoption of the child. While the legislation goes into effect on January 1st, it may apply to employees who gave birth or adopted a child in 2015. It depends on how much leave was utilized in 2015 for this purpose. AB 375 was strongly supported by the CTA in the legislative process and is yet another example of the value of being a member of the CTA. If you have questions about utilizing this paid leave under this legislation, you should contact the Human Resources Department of SCUSD.
